Rounds are being cultured and are currently marketed mainly by the Grace Pearl Group Ltd. out of Hong Kong, but also by Ruan and a few others.
Until recently the technique for consistent shape control has been entirely out of reach. The elasticity of the pearl sac during second and third grafting operations always left a slack portion of the sac which creates the tail-like appendage which give "fireballs" their shape. Now, by matching mass of the second graft implant to the harvested first graft, farmers are able to better control the shapes of their harvested pearls.
Most CBSB, bead-nucleated pearls will still have a tail. But now that the international market is appreciating these for their beauty as well it is no longer a losing proposition for farmers to chase the elusive bead-nucleated rounds.
My only problem with those pearls, by the way, is the fact that the nucleus they use is made from local giant clam shell. With no regulations in place there is no way to know how much of the shell is farmed and how much of it is illegally harvested - the giant clam (
Tridacna gigas) is a CITES protected species.
