I have been given my Grandmothers pearls, how can I determine if they are real and their value?

You can't taste to tell if a pearl is real or faux. The method you are thinking of is rubbing the pearl on your tooth, if it feels gritty it is real if it is smootyh then it is simulated. There are however people that disagree with this method.
