Paspaley Pearling Group , the world’s largest South Sea producer, told the Japanese press that they are reducing pearl oyster nucleation by 50% which will affect the overall production in two years.
Because hamaage (harvest) has an overlap of different years depending upon when the pearl oysters were nucleated, the total number of production is estimated to decrease by approximately 30% in two years. While South Sea pearl prices have been affected by the global recession, this measure was conceived as a means to stabilize the white south sea pearl market.
Currently the Paspaley Pearling Group produces their pearls in the Cobourg Peninsula area (Northern Australia) through the Bloome area (Western Australia) a wide geographic area but will now primarily focus their production at their Bloome area Pearl farms in order to reduce cultivation cost and to operate more efficiently. Their Bloome Pearl farm is the most productive farm within their group. This measure is taken to adjust to the current weaker global market demand; however they will maintain their other farms so that they can be prepared to increase production as future market conditions change. Australian South Sea Pearls are known for their large sizes, high quality and beautiful colors.
