Buying pearls in Manila

Buying pearls in Manila

Postby AlumCreek » Tue Oct 20, 2009 9:40 am

Hi,

My wife is traveling in Manila this week and was interested in purchasing some pearls there. The person she is traveling with wants to bring her to Greenhills Mall to buy the pearls. From what I have read though is that the vendors at Greenhills all say their pearls are South Seas Pearls, but that they are actually just Chinese freshwater pearls. If this is so, should she just not buy pearls there?

Thanks!

Joe,

That is certainly true. The pearls at Greenhills are almost all freshwater pearls from China, but are often sold as South Sea pearls from the Philippines. I've also seen dyed freshwater pearls that were sold as authentic, Tahitian pearl necklaces. There is no freshwater pearl production in the Philippines, only South Sea. But little of the South Sea production is sold on the local market.

It is still a good place to buy pearls, but it's important she knows what she is buying so she is not taken advantage of.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So it is ok to buy pearls there at the market? I bought her a pearl book to learn a bit about looking at pearls and I sent a lighted loop along with her too. Would she be better off going to a big jeweler like Jewelmer (sp), or is it worth looking for a bargain at Greenhills?

The friend she is with has a vendor she likes at Greenhills she has bought from before. Apparently on the last trip she picked up some pearls for a friend in the US (I am not sure for how much, maybe $100+/-). When her friend had them appraised back in the states they valued them at $1,000, but I do not know how much an appraisal, and what something is really "worth".

I just am hoping that for $300US she can find herself something pretty that will last. And if it is a bargain at that price that would be even better! :-)

I would be very careful buying Chinese FWP in Manilla but if want a real South Sea Pearl I would be glad to put you in contact with my friends at Jewelmer email me and I will arrange a contact for you.
